Easter In The Romanian Countryside

In case you want to have a traditional Easter, filled with all the fun and celebration, and with none of the stress and time spent cooking, than, a country side Easter is the thing for you.

Like you have probably heard, us Romanians are very big on celebrating, and holidays usually last three days, of eating, drinking and having a good time. And, we have the perfect settings for such fun filled holidays, that keep with the traditions that are somewhat lost in the city.

So, one place to try is Northern Bucovina. It has lots of beautiful Romanian churches, that are renowned world wide. In fact, due to their uniqueness and artistic value, some of them have even been declared Unesco patrimony.

Each monastery features a different color, and the most famous one is a special blue,  „Blue of Voronet” (albastru de Voronet – in romana). But equally as beautiful are „the red of Humor” and „the tree green”. The painters remain unknown, but the pictures on the walls of these monasteries depict biblical stories of the heavens and of the earth, about the beginning of life on earth, and of the life after death.

You can take a guided tour of these monasteries, and turn the holiday into a road trip if you will, and choose to stay each night in a different one. Some of them offer this possibility, although, you have to know that the monks and sisters do get up at a very early hour.  If you are not a morning person, than you can choose some cosy bead and breakfast – of which there are plenty, I assure you.

Easter Eggs in Romania, Gabriela Simion

Either way, you’ll get to enjoy all our traditional foods – the sweet bread, the lamb soup and roast, the lamb terrine, the eggs….and much much more. People wearing national popular costumes, singing traditional songs, marching down the little village streets during the Easter celebration.

There is another location in Romania, that is worth visiting this time of year, and any time of year for the matter. I am talking about Transilvania, and its picturesque villages.

Prince Charles has recently made Transilvania well know to the world, so prices may be competitive, but it is all worth it. You get to spend this very special holiday away from the hustle and bustle of the city, away from crowded visiting spots. Jus choose a small village (there are lots of them in Transilvania), and you will find yourself in the heart of green lands and pastures, with terrific views, that will remind you of simpler times. You can choose from Viscri (prince Charles’s favorite), Biertan, Saschiz, Rupea, and many many more.

Should you go for this quiet Easter celebration, I am sure you will not regret it. You’ll have a chance to get back to nature, to experience things like they used to be, in a place where people are especially proud of their traditional costumes, and wear them any chance they get. You’ll eat to your heart’s content – there is no argument there – and you will be part of a holiday that is bigger than any of us.

Easter is very special to Romanians everywhere, and the moment we all share the light, at midnight, is so touching and will recharge your batteries for the rest of the year. Remember, this year the orthodox and the catholic share the same date for Easter, so the party will only be bigger.
